Iceberg Lettuce

Overall the iceberg lettuce market is steady for the most part and now it is starting to firm up a bit. Supplies are average. Warm afternoon weather along with heavy fog in the mornings has cases some irregular growing patterns. Most suppliers are seeing increased mildew pressure as well as burn. Harvesting crews are cleaning the product as best they can, but expect to see some defects upon arrival.

Romaine, Green Leaf and Spring Mix

The quality on leafy greens out of Salinas is good. As is the case with iceberg suppliers are fighting mildew pressure and burn due to the foggy mornings and warm afternoons. Supplies are a little tighter than iceberg on both romaine and green leaf. These light supplies are expected for the next couple of weeks.

Cabbage

Cabbage quality has been below average over the past couple of weeks. 100 plus degree days in Georgia earlier in the month stressed the crop tremendously. Harvesting has now shifted to Michigan and Ohio. Head size is on the smaller side, but this is expected to improve. Warmer days in the Great Lakes area will help with the growth. Supplies are plentiful on both red and green as this is expected to be the trend for the near future.  

Onions

Onions are being shipped out of Texas, California, and New Mexico at this time. The quality on both red and yellows has been excellent. Supplies are plentiful on both colors as well. Demand on the medium sizes has been very strong. Supplies on the mediums are tighter than Jumbos. There do not seem to be any supply or quality issues in the near future.

Tomatoes

Tomato supplies will remain plentiful unless weather affects for next 3 months. During July, August and September, Virginia will be the major supplier in the East. The other major shipping areas for the next three months will be California, North Carolina, Tennessee and Ohio.    Look for prices to remain low to average during the Summer.
