Iceberg Lettuce

The iceberg market has been fairly soft over the last couple of weeks.  Quality and supplies are very good.  Bin weights range from 925 lbs to 1025 lbs.  While most shippers shut down production for a three day span last month due to rain, overall there have been minimal defects from this event.   Look for the quality and supply to remain strong for the next couple of weeks.

Romaine, Green Leaf and Spring Mix

The leaf market continues to be steady.  Green Leaf and Romaine still show some epidermal peel and blister from the cold temperatures last month.  However, the overall quality is very good and demand is light.  Carton weights on romaine range from

42-46 lbs and green leaf from 31-36 lbs. 

Cabbage

Most cabbage is being shipped from Florida and Texas.  However, there are minimal amounts of storage cabbage being shipped from New York and Canada.  The Texas crop has been pushed back a couple of weeks due to colder than normal temperatures and rain.  The market on both red and green will remain high for the next 3-4 weeks.

Onions

The onion market continues to be a little more active.  Exports overseas and shipments into Mexico have helped provide a strong increase in demand.  Quality continues to be very nice on both yellows and reds.  Availability on all sizes is very good, especially on jumbos and larger.  Look for demand on red onions to soon overtake red onion supplies. 

Tomatoes

Tomatoes are currently becoming less available with supplies basically zero for the next two months from Florida.  The major shipping area for the next two months will be Mexico at very high prices with some supplies from Puerto Rico.  This situation will cause severe shortages until late April to May.
